I feel a very deep personal connection to this film. I’m Italian, born in 1976, and I still remember vividly the very first time I saw The Good, the Bad and the Ugly on television in the early 1980s, when my father introduced it to me. As a child, I wasn’t particularly drawn to westerns, but this masterpiece opened the door for me to the entire world of spaghetti westerns, sparking a passion that led me to discover many other classics of the genre.
Even after all these years, it remains one of my all-time favorite films, a timeless work of art that shaped the way I look at cinema. And now, thanks to Arrow Video’s stunning new 4K edition, the film finally receives the treatment it has always deserved. Experiencing it again with the new color grading was nothing short of breathtaking
Nice review! I’m expecting my trilogy to arrive on Monday, and I can’t wait to dive in. I am a fan of these films, but they aren’t my favorite westerns. I actually still had the old DVD boxset that MGM put out 20+ years ago. That said I know these are very important films, so I had to jump on the preorder when i saw what kind of definitive editions Arrow was making for them.
This is one of the reasons why I say Arrow is the best boutique label. I’ve never seen any other boutique label or studio who put this much effort in restoring not only one cut, but TWO cuts of the film, where one of them had missing scenes and took the time finding them and restoring them. That’s not just restoration, that’s DEDICATION!
Perhaps do key 4k movie reviews. There’s only about 10 significant 4k movies per year. The rest is crap.

For a Few Dollars More is my Favorite western of all-time so I definitely agree with you that this is the best of the trilogy. I am also not the biggest western fan so take that as you will. Good video brother.

I’m sad that you won’t be doing the reviews on the regular channel. I really like the informative film maker perspective that you do. I have learned some things from them. I understand though and hope someday you will reconsider your main channel. Maybe someday you will start getting review copies and will share those reviews on your standard channel. Good luck with everything you do.

Chase, what ticks me off is that you have been one of the most influential voices on the videos I've purchased. If a vendor does it right they shouldn't worry about your review. And…the factor that they don't send their products to you to review ticks me off.

so I'm ancient, 68 or so. I remember when this first got shown on the tube, I think ABC Sunday night at the movies, that final duel? Wow was that chopped up. and they had no mercy and no sense. the music, of course IS the build up. but the tv editors did not care. they just cut right in the middle of the music, and the music stopped cold. When the trio are taking their positions at the beginning of the set up, it looked as if Lee, simply Teleported to his position! Much of the eye acting, where Clearly Eastwood is staring down Tuco, so that Van Cleef will think Eastwood is not prepared for him… all of that, chopped out. So we never saw the tactics. As a kid I almost cried. Was afraid I'd never see it again, correctly.
We've come a long way.

Great review, Chase. FAFDM is my favorite of the trilogy too. But Eli Wallach is soooo good in TGTBATU. Like you, I grew up with westerns playing on TV but I didn’t appreciate them until I got into landscape photography and started seeing them a little differently. It’s become one of my favorite genres. But I agree with what you said – a good move transcends the genre. We need more westerns on 4k, especially if they can get this level of treatment.
