i love dead and company – best band in teh world, but if your going to "review" u shud mention they butchered estimated prophet harder then they have ever butchered anything in the 40 times ive seen them.
One of the very few things I am happy about being 70 years old is I saw most of my shows from 1970-1988, that was the Grateful Dead, hasn't been around for a long, long time…blessed to have been at the Capitol in Port Chester when they played in 71
I worship Bobby and his contribution to the GD sound. Been going to shows since 85. It's time for him to retire. Please. John, Mickey and the rest should keep it going. Bobby's guitar sounded like a pickup truck running over a rusted out Dobro. Sad when you see someone you love and listen to every day, all day preforming poorly.
You lost me when you said that they did a "really good job" with Passenger. I love that rare Lesh rocker, and saw the Dead do it many times in the brief few years they performed it. The D&Co. version was clunky, with Weir simply not up to singing it.
idk when all you deadheads became haters
Hey bro, Mickey joined in 67, not 68.
dissapointed to be honest….there is only so much Mayer style blues one can tolerate. Bob is done and has been for a while. You want a great Dead experience? Check out Dark Star Orchestra…they are the real deal..
Musically, exactly the same way I feel. But I believe it's more about the community these days than the music. And I feel, more than ever, this is very important. And, by the way, since 1967, Bob Weir has always been my favorite musician of the Grateful Dead. Cuz I do feel the music is not all that. Just right background. And you know what, that's what they were at the acid test. So maybe it's come full circle. Anyway it's a positive positive thing. Love, Charlie Ventura
I thought Bob Weir looked way off, struggling, almost Bidenesque—sad
60 years of What Band Bobby and the imposters 🤣🤣🤣
Well stated review. I agree with just about everything you said. It’s not easy to say some of these things without getting attacked. Bobby has been using that tone for a long time and it really isn’t pleasant. I think he’s a genius on rhythm but I have to be able to hear him to enjoy it. I wonder if he hears something different in his monitor? Could it be hearing loss related? Anyway, I enjoyed the weekend from my couch but was critical of the same things you were.
The real truth part starts at 12:12
I agree with you 100 percent
Spot on analysis. But as my Wife pointed out on 3rd show; Bobby is an old man….he is just getting old, and that's ok……and that is life. And we all have had the good fortune to get old with the various iterations of the Dead to grow older, and hopefully wiser, with. I thought it was over after Jerry passed. I thought it was over after Fare Thee Well. I thought it was over after the last show at Oracle (shout out to the drone shows). But each time, in the next phase, I had more shows and new friends and family to share them with. I love the evolution, even though I'd prefer a little more up-tempo. Now i spend a fair amount of show time remembering previous shows, who I was with, and what happened at "that show," and it gives me great perspective. This time had the great fortune to party on Haight with the whole nuclear family (lots of first timers!) and spend some time during the show fretting about everyone's future in this increasingly hinky world. And I thought about coming in cold to my first show (Pine Knob Music Theater 1984, if you wondered) with my still best friend and how incredible that was. That's what happened at that show……………..You get it.
they have sounded beyond rusty since they started dead and co………….bob's guitar playing is horrible, his tone is atrocious, the drumming sucks and the vocals are not much better………..im so thankful I got to see them when jerry was still around…….ill stick with dicks picks…….
Bobby did seem very rusty. but Mickey was locked in! the music never stopped!
A few thoughts— Of course Weir is slow. He is really old. Of course Weir can be lame. He always has been at times. . I find it amusing when people say "oh yeah, I ve seen them since the 90's and….."😂😂😂 Jerry was an obese addict by the mid 80s and was a shadow of his former self most shows. Go look in the mirror with your shirt off and tell me how you are still the same. If not for the dead would Weir never have been a big deal. Bobby and the Midnights? ugh. The only concert I ever walked out of was Kingfish after Weir came on stage song three and cranked up his pink guitar, shook off 20 lines of blow, and broke into "fesitval". . Ouch.
The Dead was never about the band, it was about the tribe. They have said that themselves over and over. They were a dance band. I dont think people who came in later quite understand that. They played dance halls. San Francisco had dance halls vs true concert halls. The Stones were a concert band, the Dead were a dance band. Thats how they were built. There is a fundamental difference. Im not just pulling this out of my butt, if you were not there go do your homework. The music was meant for participation more than watching. That is what made the scene in San Francisco so different. When that morphed (lets say post tough of grey but arguably much earlier) it got a bit out of sync. Yes when they were young they had some insane shows. But the road, drugs, ex wives, stupidly obsessed fans, huge payrolls to feed and life in general wore them down way before the 90s. Ticket prices? Whatever. A McDonalds shit burger meal is $15. Hopefully Oteill, Jeff etc can lay up some $.
Golden Gate park was about connecting with decades old friends, looking at each other and wondering if I look as old as they do, remembering the adventures, good times, friends gone, seeing and hugging exes, walking on the grass and smoking a joint in the same place we have done it since high school. It was about giving thanks, showing appreciation to all those in our life both here and gone. It was about passing the tribal torch to the kids, praying for them and the planet we are leaving them. It was about forgiving, it was about holding out a hand to those who move slower because time is catching us all. It was about giving honor through memory to our lives. Fillmore West, Winterland, Bill Graham. It was about San Francisco, Our wonderful, fucked up, crazy city that gave birth to the psychedelic sound. Hippies, Hells Angels pcp and Owsley's finest. Running away from home to join the circus. A beautiful, messy, fucked up brilliant circus that still reverberates today.
Dude what about ratdog
I saw them in Lindley Meadow, Sept 1975. I was at GGP Friday with Billy Strings. Thought it was very good. First, set a bit subdued but good nonetheless. Saw 4 shows at Sphere. I have a close-up in the GD Movie. Immediately after the mirror ball in morning dew. My close-up comes from Wed oct. 16 ,1974 ,Bobs 27th birthday. I slept on the corner of Post and Steiner two nights and was the first guy in line and through the doors. Not only that, my face is the only recognizable face on the inside double live cover of steal your face other than the band and their crew. MAYBE two other recognizable faces, BUT since i don't know if anyone besides me has made such a claim, i am claiming to the only one. Bobby may have had a stroke recently. He was drooling and spitting, and his voice slurred a bit . Just a thought.
People complain about slow tempos and i get it, but i would see Jerry slow tempos much much slower than DC . Shows that looked like he was going to nod out at any moment . Bobs thin guitar sound is metalic . Not sure about the GGP show but he was useing AC 30 Vox at the sphere. Vox can sound metalic and thin sometimes . I agree with all this stuff. Thanks !
you seriously have ads running through this review
No edge, no risk, no danger. Geriatric diddling. I preferred the days of “A mind blown is a mind shown.” Where the shows were geared toward the freaks, real subversive subculture shit. When you weren’t worried about where the exits were, but how can I get back into my body so that I can start to think about where the exits are. Consciousness expansion to bring about radical social change. That seems gone and it seems like an amusement park ride or like that fake Paris in Las Vegas, or like the Haight these days, corporate capitalization of something decidedly non corporate or commercial. It just seems plastic and fake. Not even beating a Dead horse, but beating the ungrateful ghost of a Dead horse. Sorry…I love what the Grateful Dead were with all of my heart and soul, but this ain’t that! I love Bobby and Mickey, and wish them the opportunity to go on for as long as they find it within themselves to do so. Maybe the chemical aspects of the experience were too important to me…..maybe not. I miss the confusion and chaos. I miss the danger. It made things very very very fun. He.he…👁️⚡️👁️
I tried listening to these shows on my headphones while walking. Honestly it was a chore.
I thought that Shakedown jam was one of the highlights of the third night for me. That rhythmic riff that John starts at around the 11:40 mark and Oteil joins in with the same riff sounded so fkn' good. You're absolutely spot on about the energy and tempo being too slow. I think JRAD is a good example of how those songs should be played.
There was no ugly. That was absolutely beautiful.
The content of what I heard was beyond bad…..everything played at half measure…awful complete excrement….and to think people paid to be there….BTW…i love the DEAD
The last show with Bobby? Now you need to STFU
I'm not as judgemental as you I guess! The fact that after decades we can still be united by the music is enough said!
I prefer to remember seeing JGB in the Warfield, stopping by the Marin Denny's for some late night grub, and laying my head down on Muir Beach before heading up to Humboldt Co. the next morning. This is like waking up thirsty and grabbing a can of beer only to find it warm and full of cigarette butts. 😢😮🤢
Gone are the days of cocaine driven uptempo high energy shows. Fun while it lasted. Watched Jerry decline and now Bob, the old man is gettin on.
I think Bobby looked and sounded sad throughout these shows. Phil was supposed to be part of this thing and that’s gotta hurt. I’m sure it’s bittersweet to be on the stage performing your band’s songs with a new generation of musicians because most of your bandmates are gone. Knowing that the music will live on forever in good hands, but that your time to be a part of it is running out. I’m sure it was an emotional weekend for Bobby.
I thought Bob played pretty well on Scarlet/Fire. Just another rhythm guitarist's opinion lol
Your "comments" are crap !!!😂💩
Sometimes they’re on sometimes they’re off but they’re always CLOSE ENOUGH
Agree on Bobby’s guitar sound. The Dead welcome mystery and thoughts on mortality. It makes sense to me that they have Bob up there on stage, it’s still fun to party with Bob in all his Gandalf Eastwood glory. I think it’s such a lesson for all the youngsters to see the respect John Mayer shows for the older generation of musicians. But yeah, after this weekend Bobby might want to stick to playing Sweetwater and give his blessing for the band to recruit another slinger singer.
Midnight hour… irony?
One man gathers what another one spills. It ain’t Jerry, but who is? We have to live in the moment and enjoy what we have when we have the chance to. Comparing it to the past isn’t what Jerry would have wanted. He would want us moving forward and furthur, continuing to search for the sound.
Thank you for speaking to the tempo. I love the nostalgia and experience of these shows but damn, it would be amazing to see these songs at full speed.
Billy Strings doesn’t want to play the dead’s music. He wants to play Billy Strings music. John, Jeff and Oteil are not the dead, they’re the and co. It’s over. That’s ok. Everything ends.
You wanna see some awesome upbeat dude dead?? Go see JRAD!!!! Waaaay better than Dead & Slo lulling you to sleep….🛌 😴 💤
I'm sure you are going to get a lot of hate for saying what many are thinking. Perhaps it doesn't need to be said out loud. I was only at night one. As disappointing as the first set was, it was keeps and bounds better than the first set of the last Dead and Company show I went to which was last summer in Vegas. That first set, Bobby couldn't remember any of the words. I was fearing for his life. Then he came out the second set and TORE IT UP!! I mean, he took complete control of the set and sounded as strong and powerful as ever. I mean, the transformation was unbelievable!! Like 2 different people. I don't want to count Bobby out just yet. There have been several times over the years where I thought, "This is it." Most notably, one time back with Further where he had backup singers helping him out because his voice was so week. I can't imagine it's an easy task keeping your vocal cords healthy with that singing style. We all love when he belts it out. The crowd goes crazy!! But he's old and things dont heal as fast. Maybe he lost his voice a bit in the practices leading up to these shows. And if he did, it must have bummed hi out. I also didn't think his sound guys where doing him any favors. Not amplified enough to where I was standing. Maybe it was better closer up?? I didn't go to any of the spring Sphere shows, but I would love to know how his voice was. The guitar effects you mentioned are mind boggling to me, but it's been that way going all the way back to the 90's. You here him play acoustic solo and you're like "Wow!!" But electric, not so much. As for Mickey, I disagree. He's just getting better and better!! Drums and Space are highlights of every show. I wouldn't say that about it back in the late 80'tjrough 95. I often took that opportunity to go to the bathroom back then. But now, I look forward to it every show. It's gone to a whole new level. I would love for this to keep on keepin' on. I hope John keeps it alive and fun and brings in Trey and Billy Strings as often as possible. Was blown away by Billy. Never seen him before. Didn't care for most of the Bluegrass, but when he came back on and played Wharf Rat, I couldn't believe my ears. He could easily take over for John if John wanted out. It would be awesome to see them do a whole show together trading off lead and rhythm. One can only hope. Loved seeing Graham Lesh for the first time too. His voice especially on the Phil songs was especially welcome during these shows. Wish they had let Oteil sing. In any case, I'm always going to route for Bobby and feel good knowing that the young guys are there to catch him when he stumbles. This music hasn't finished evolving and never will. So many good Dead cover bands out there that are interpreting the music in new and interesting ways. Hope to see what John can do once he can do it completely his way at his tempo with guitarists that he can really communicate with the way he did with Trey. Maybe even a new and improved Donna?? Who knows, but I'm not worried. Dead and Company have i spired a whole new generation of musicians and fans. The music is here for many more years whether this was the last Dead and Company show or not. For that, I'll always be thankful to every member of this band.
My husband and I ahem took sacrament Friday night and streamed the show here in North Carolina. He was exceptionally frustrated with Bobby, and i kept repeating "HE'S 77!" It's hard to see someone you love not be as vigorous as they once were. I skipped night 2 bc I was wiped from night one, and tbh was not thrilled with the show, with the exception of Wharf Rat. I live listened on Sirius channel 23 night 3 and was SO RELIEVED that they chose more upbeat Dead. I was actually getting pulled over for a headlight (not love light haha) during Scarlet…no ticket! I ADORE JEFF CHIMENTI AND OTEIL!!!❤❤❤❤❤
Booooooo
If this band ends, that should be it. Let JRAD and others do their thing with Dead tunes. But I feel like any young up and coming musician who commits to playing dead tunes would be depriving themselves and their fans of something new.
Money grab .. Sad stuff. SF park should have completely free …
All of it ended in 1995. Everything after was cos play. When I was young I saw GD with Jerry a handful of times. I was very into it. My adult brain in my 50’s can’t comprehend how people worship it. It’s a weird cult that frankly kinda sucks and is completely boring.
Is Bobby about to die is what i thought ..I hate to be harsh but it's time to retire and all…We love you and we want you to enjoy us the fans just a little longer..
scarlet wasn't good even with trey. very meh
Dead & Slow is not even in my top 3 GD cover/tribute bands. Summed it up, so boring
