The Good, Bad, and Ugly of Mario & Luigi Brothership

With Mario & Luigi: Brothership ending a nine-year hiatus for this series, I have been so excited about this game, but now that we finally have the ability to play it, I wanted to cover everything this game did right and also where this game completely missed. All of that will be in this video where we go over the good, the bad, and the ugly of Mario & Luigi: Brothership.

  1. Two words: Unreal Engine. It's an AWFUL engine. It only "works" on PC when you throw extremely powerful hardware at it, and even then it has performance issues. I've seen performance issues with gmaes on a 9800X3D+5080 which is orders of magnitude beyond the Switch. The worst of the frame drops are in the hammer minigame. Yeah, try hitting a ball back and forth with precise timing with 30fps and random frame drops. Input lag is also enormous at 30fps, so adding random frame drops to that makes this minigame almost impossible. I almost quit at that point before I finally did it. I like the game but the performance is completely unacceptable and the art style does not justify it.

Hopefully this will be one of the ones that gets a performance boost on Switch 2.

  2. One of the worst parts of this game is that Yoko Shimomura didn't return for the music

Some themes were good but the music overall feels soulless without her

  3. This game is honestly at least the third best in the series. Anyone who says otherwise didn’t play it all the way through. The only complaints with this game is the opening section, how Luigi controls, there should have been more bosses, and the boss themes.

  4. Random encounter with long loading battle is the worst thing , i hate this thing so much that i stopped playing two of my favourite games legend of dragoon & skies of arcadia, just for this stupid reason

  5. Faster sailing turns off when you approach a new object in the ocean you can interact with to make it less likely you speed past it then have to wait for the ship to come back into range since the ship can't turn mid current. I don't know which complaint is sillier this or the one about the loading times.

  6. I really, REALLY love this game. Great gameplay, awesome artstyle, fun characters and story, but holy shit the fact that they are undodgeable enemies in the MIDDLE OF THE PATH that im basically forced to battle sucks. Yeah, I guess this is somewhat of a normal RPG thing but the fact that it takes like 45 seconds to flee made me slam my controller multiple times. This happened on merrygo island, the worst example of this problem. THE STUPID FUCKING SNAPTORS KEPT SWOOPING IN ON ME IN A CONFINED SPACE FOR AN HOUR WHILE I WAS TRYING TO FIND THE EXIT. What the fuck man

  7. Im almost done, and literally, my only complaint is to few bossfights. If they would had you do more one on one fights early on against the members of the trio and sprinkled in a Bowser Jr. And a Kamek fight in it would have been better.

  8. Here are my thoughts (all that came to mind while writing this) on Brothership (not ordered besides being positive, mixed or negative):

    Positives:
    – You don't need to control Luigi in the overworld
    – Lots of easter eggs
    – The difficulty (except of the final boss which is way too easy for a final boss) is good
    – The side quests are well implemented and add a lot to the story
    – The game has it's own unique setting and story (like any Mario RPG should have)
    – It's still got the classic Mario and Luigi humor and charm
    – It took some time to get used to the art style but it is truly unique and fits Mario and Luigi well
    – The animations are lively and quite expressive
    – Using the stick of the right joy con for the overworld abilities works great and is faster than using R and L
    – Luigi having an idea for an unique special attack agianst most bosses is super cool
    – Navigating the island works surprisingly well (tho the teleport ability should have been given to the player earlier)
    – The ability to not only speed up but also to fully skip cutscenes is great

    Mixed:
    – The battle plugs are cool but using them can feel tedious and slow compared to the badges from BiS and DT (PJ still nailed it with the battle cards tho)
    – The battle plugs mainly buff normal attacks which is nice but I would have liked some more buff for bros attacks
    – The challenges are small and for the most part not too difficult or tedious but their rewards are rather disappointing (expert challenges from DT were better and yielded a well deserved duplex crown as reward for completing them all)
    – Generally the game has enough new content but at the same time lots of stuff is either heavily inspired or straight up copied from other titles (it's not bad to have some stuff from old titles but it felt a little too much to me)

    Negatives:
    – No battle arena (this is simply outrageous)
    – Changing Luigi's battle controls (why would you change something that worked fine for 7 titles)
    – No direct comparison of gear (If you bring over half of Dream Teams QoL stuff why wouldn't you bring it all over)
    – Performance issues (mainly after Reclusa takes over and there is too much for the switch to render)
    – The loadtime is ludicrous
    – Horrible pacing (took about 8h to get to the first boss and bros attacks)
    – Lack of good, memorable music
    – The final boss is in every way disappointing (music, difficulty, atmosphere, even gameplay is disappointing)
    – Too few bros attacks for such a long game and especially way too few original ones
    – The game feels stretched (too many animations that take too long to finish and are often repeated)
    – No menu where you can view statistics like collected blocks, etc.
    – No item to help with finding invisible blocks (look at BiS or SMRPG… That's how you do it)
    – Hammer and Jump Attack Stats do not influence bros attacks like they did in Dream Team (that was a great idea DT had)

    Overall rating:
The game is worth buying but it's nowhere near the best Mario and Luigi Game. It a worthy 6th entry tho.
