  1. First of all, recreating someone from a picture like they did Lincoln is much easier than recreating someone that was seen in countless video recordings. We have about 150 photographs on Lincoln and that is it. Everyone will think it look great because no one really knows how his face looked when he talked, how many mannerisms he had, if his jaw moved to the side a bit as he spoke. It is not a fair comparison.

As for the Walt animatronic I think there are two things at play here besides that we have countless hours of filming of him to scrutinize… yes it seems to me the face is a little too wide but more than that it is hard to mimic facial expressions, so they have him permanently with a half smile ( as they want to portray a joyful walt) but that is not how we as humans look when we talk, even when we are talking excitedly.

The human face has 43 muscles… We use something like 100 muscles to talk…Sorry to all the disappointed people but animatronics are not there yet… The question of should they have done it then? is another matter entirely, but expecting much better than this is plain unrealistic.

  2. Question to any reader: Would "you" want a robot made of "you" 60 years after "you" die? Would "you" want a company in the future to take RANDOM recordings of "you" and edit them and add them to "your" robot for sales and marketing of this company….WITHOUT "YOUR" CONSENT??? I bet nobody want's this for themselves. It's NOT FAIR to Walt because he has no ability to approve or reject this representation of himself.

  3. I have heard many different opinions from different folks who saw the two shows today. It sounds like it's slightly better in person and better in the front of the room vs the back. I agree with you guys that this was not a slam dunk but will withhold full judgement until I see it in person. I hope they do tweak it and improve it over time.

  4. It isn't perfect, but what is? If you take the Hall of Presidents, which presidents look the worse to most people? most likely any from modern day. Why? we have seen them in person, in video or in photos. Ones like George Washington or Abe Lincoln, all you have seen are portraits (aka drawings) and it is easier to replicate a drawing of a person. Can't see all the features that person has.
Walt's animatronic doesn't look right to me because he appears to have chubby cheeks and double chin. I think Walt's neck is too short, maybe lengthen it and thin his cheeks a little. It could also be the lighting, causing a shadow. Maybe just a little tweak could help

  5. Nice video. I can’t wait to see it in person I just wish more people weren’t so toxic in the fandom about literally everything Disney does without experiencing it. Outrage sells clicks and engagement and it just puts a damper to all the imagineers that put sweat and tears into the project. I appreciate the company for putting this together for us and appreciate you for level headed takes and not pushing outrage for views

  6. Okay, so after molding over it for a little bit I think I figured out the three things that would make this look so much better. And luckily, they all have to do with the eyes; make them darker, make the eyelids more hooded, and slim the eyebrows a little bit. I'm willing to make concessions about the cheat s because as was mentioned this is a machine that probably needs the room to have mechanisms and wires to move the mouth, but to me it's the eyes that are throwing it off the most.

  7. I wonder if instead of using theater lighting, if they used projection mapping lighting techniques they could keep the sides of his face darker, (regardless how he turns his head), and that would make his head look narrower, especially from a distance in the theater.

As for the audio, I think an issue is that the recordings are of him talking while sitting and in this show he is standing and supposedly projecting to a live audience, and those are very different situations. Go watch an interview with a CEO, and then watch them speak to a crowd or do a TED Talk. I'm not an expert but it's like the difference between speaking from your larynx vs. lungs, or something. That's what they need audio engineers, and maybe some AI, to help simulate.

  8. i find it very jarring to see his face just slightly too short/wide. if it was just a bit longer, the wideness would be spot on and it would actually look like walt. or maybe it’s that the neck is really short??? after all this time working on such an incredibly important animatronic, i’m honestly shocked they would release him like this. i really feel they could have done better.

  9. OrangeGrove 55. Lad's, I have to agree the animatronic Walt is just so close to perfect. He has all his mannerisms, arm and hand movements he even raises his fingers and even his eyebrows just as Walt did. It's hard to say but there's something thats just falls short of perfect. And if we don't know what it is neither do the Imagineers. But it just niggles. I wish the collar of his shirt was not 1/2 a size to big. In an interview in 1963 for National Geographic magazine Walt said he still had all his teeth. He also said he intended to be around for a long time yet. The Walt speech has been put through an A.I. programme but it's taken out all the warmth in the voice. They should have given it to Peter Jackson to run it through his "Mal" system You can see what he did for John Lennons voice on the Beatles "Now and Then" music video. Cheers, Chris Perry.

  10. The people expecting perfection are going to be disappointed. Just enjoy the show for what it is. The animatronic doesn't look bad at all, might even look better in person. 🤷

  11. This does not look like Walt. Why?….because Walt Disney Imagineering now hire staff because of their race and gender, NOT because of their talent. The end result is that talentless or mediocre people are given the jobs instead of those with real ability. They would rather have inferior and poor craftsmanship than have a completely white workforce. WDI state: "Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) prioritizes diversity and inclusion….WDI aims to have a workforce that reflects the diversity of their guests….WDI has a supplier diversity program that prioritizes businesses with diverse ownership, including women-owned, minority-owned, and LGBTQIA+-owned businesses".

  12. I am absolutely astounded by the lack of likeness with this animatronic, it looks nothing like Walt Disney, putting this out is an insult to the great man and his family, i couldn't believe it when I saw it! Just terrible

  13. Couldn't they have gotten a freaking 3D printer to a totally accurate scupt of his face and use that as the sculpt?! It's a no-brainer. Also they had their pick of the world's best sculptures to do it
